  Chapter 1: Plan

Since coming to this universe after dying on Earth, John had fought thousands of people and animals, killed billions more using all sorts of tricks and tactics, and even fought a universal war against the strongest immortal Sider of both universes.

However, at this moment, he was enduring the toughest trial of his life—sitting at the kitchen table, being interrogated by his daughter.

  “Where you been?”

  John smiled. “Slaying monsters.”

The first few questions were easy. She asked what he was wearing and other silly things kids would ask. She even misspoke a few times to back up her act. Before meeting up with Sarah, he had gone to the king’s castle to “ask” for the golden eagle badge that Kelly was now wearing, but before that he went to see what clothes the knights wore.

At the end of his visit, he transformed the nanometal and made a copy of the brown t-shirt, trousers, and boots, all of which had the Bahan Kingdom’s insignia on them. This way, he was able to support tales of him being a newly retired knight that just came home from fighting a war.

After a few more hard questions, John decided to turn the tables.

Looking at Kelly, he asked, “Are you really only three years old?”

Knowing that she was hiding her Sider status, John knew it would make Kelly hesitate in asking even harder questions.

It worked like he predicted, and Kelly soon began to act her age better while displaying brief spurts of above-average intelligence for a toddler. After a few minutes, Kelly said goodbye to John and ran off to her bedroom.

When Kelly’s door shut, John sighed in relief as he let his head hit the table. A few minutes later, Sarah came to see how it went since it was their first talk after meeting. John smiled and whispered to her how it went since he didn’t want Kelly to overhear him, causing Sarah to laugh.

Later that night, John and Sarah flew a few miles to an abandoned cave. Having practiced using the metal and earth element while on the battlefield, John could now make the earth or any metal into a liquid that stayed in place. Essentially, he had created a version of the waterbed back on Earth.

A few hours later, John was lying down on his makeshift waterbed and Sarah was next to him with her head on his chest. He was narrating all the things that had happened to him on the battlefield.

When he finished talking, he created an Information Sphere. It had the proper cultivation method, his new absorbing and breathing techniques, all the information about how to use the elements that he had come up with so far, Luke’s disguise technique, and all the information he had obtained from the Death Sect and the battlefield’s libraries.

He then created a Blank Sphere and gave it to Sarah to fill with everything that had happened since settling in their new home. He wanted to see Kelly’s first steps, hear her first words, and other things that he had missed while fighting in the war.

She went above and beyond that, putting everything that happened to her since meeting John inside the sphere. She wanted John to experience everything that had happened to her over the years.

Going through the information, John realised she hadn’t told Kelly anything because she thought Kelly was a normal three-year-old girl who wouldn’t understand anything she tried to explain.

Sarah’s plan was to tell Kelly a made up story that would make all the pieces fit when Kelly was at least ten years old, but only if John hadn’t returned by then.

A few minutes later, Sarah opened her eyes after going through all the information John had provided.

John then asked, “What’re we going to say about the puppets? Since they can’t talk, we’ll need to come up with a cover story for them; however, I honestly think we should place them all inside our Storage Space until Kelly becomes an immortal.”

Sarah tilted her head up to look at John. “Why would we do that? Kelly gets along with Isabel. If she disappears, Kelly will miss her.”

Thanks to the information Sarah had given him, John knew that Isabel was the female fighter puppet that Sarah named after Kelly was born.

“I’m thinking about the future. Imagine you came to a new universe, found a best friend, and grew up together. Then, when you turned twenty-one and became an immortal, your parents told you that the person you considered a best friend was a puppet with no emotions, under the control of your parents.”

Sarah stood in silence with her mouth agape. She hadn’t thought about how much of a problem that could be in the future. She agreed to John’s idea and they both came up with a plan.

They decided to tell Kelly that the puppets were only helping Sarah until John returned because they had saved their lives in the past. Now that John was back, it was time for them to return to their families.

Over the next few hours, they talked about what to tell Kelly in regar
ds to how they met, why Sarah chose to live in the jungle, and a few other things.

John then took out a thousand beastman cores of each element and gave them to Sarah. It took about twenty minutes for Sarah to gain control over all thirteen elements after eating a few hundred cores altogether. John placed the remaining cores inside his Storage Space to save them for Kelly to use as an Immortal.

After going through all the plans, John destroyed the bed, and as they were getting ready to fly back to the house, Sarah asked, “What’re you going to do about that Demon personality you talked about? You do know that making it do the breathing technique for you is only a temporary fix, right?”

“What can I do? I know it isn’t a permanent solution, but I don’t know how to get rid of it.”

“Who said you should get rid of it?” Sarah asked. “While it gave you suggestions to do those things to the mortals and blow up planets to generate the sins, it might’ve helped you in other ways, too; like dealing with the after-effects of killing so many people.

“Immortals are still technically human, and killing that many people would take a toll on anybody. Compared to the soldiers who fought in wars back on Earth, you’re perfectly fine without showing any signs of distress. That’s insane considering the fact that they might’ve killed a few hundred people at the very most, whereas you’ve killed billions.

“It could be the Demon personality taking in all the negative emotions, leaving you with the benefits and none of the repercussions.

“If that’s the case and you get rid of the Demon personality, then all of that negativity might overwhelm you mentally and seriously harm your psyche.

“I wasn’t a psychologist but I did quite a few rounds in the psych ward in the hospital before, and I remember the way to fix this is to, well, fuse the personalities together.

“The only possible way that I know of is to confront the source of the split. In your case, it comes from you killing innocent people, including children, on your rampage against the Anti-assassin Sect. I’m not sure how to help, but you’ve got to come to terms with what you’ve done on your own.” She grabbed his hand and squeezed it before continuing.

“I feel like I’m partly to blame. You wouldn’t have done what you did if I didn’t fall into a coma after losing the fight. Despite what you did, how you act, or what you’ll do in the future, you’re a kind and caring man, and I’m happy about that. Someone without a conscience wouldn’t be in the situation you’re in.”

John shook his head. “I have no idea where to start. You’ve seen the conscious centre the Demon talked about in the Information Sphere, but I don’t even know how to get there. How am I supposed to talk to the Demon or come to terms with killing children?”

Sarah shrugged her shoulders. “I’m not an expert either. This is the sort of thing people used to hire psychologists for back on Earth.”

John took a deep breath and rubbed his temples. “I can’t do anything about it now, so I might as well focus on what to do next. I think it’s time for Kelly to start training in the basics of martial arts. I want to give her the skills to improve her body and make her immune to poisons, but that wouldn’t be possible without her system informing her about my Share skill.”

Sarah thought about the poison immunity and answered, “If we want her to have a fairly normal childhood, then you can’t use your Share skill. The best way to fight poisons without a mysterious system is for the body to create antitoxins to fight it, but the only way for those antitoxins to get created is by being exposed to the poisons.

“I can administer the smallest amount of poison to her body for a short period of time before giving her the antidote. That will make her body immune to those poisons over time. We’ve done experiments like that back on Earth, so I know what I’m doing.”

John smiled. “We’ll have to go with that plan for the time being then. We’ve got time. From now on, I’m going to try to figure out what her system is. With any luck, she won’t have to kill millions of people to get any real strength, like Danny’s system.

“Let’s go home. Kelly will wake up in a few hours.”

  Chapter 2: Story

The next morning, John and Sarah were sitting at the kitchen table and talking. Sarah whispered, “Since we know she’s a Sider, why don’t we just tell her everything?”

John shook his head and whispered back, “We know nothing of her past life. When someone suddenly comes to a new universe and a system shows up with skills that could literally help them rule the world, we don’t know how that person will react.

“If they were bullied in their past life and then come into that kind of power, they might just go around killing people they see bullying others.

“I was lucky back then. I was still mourning over Lisa’s death and had no interest in other women. If I hadn’t been in that headspace and I had gained that kind of power as a single, straight male in a place bombarded by women, who knows what I would’ve done.

“With that kind of power, who could stop me from getting what I wanted? You know I would never do something like that, but other Siders could be tempted to do what they want even if they know it’s wrong.”

Sarah could only sigh since she knew John had a valid point. When she became an immortal and gained a bit of strength, she went around helping people because she was a doctor in her past life.

Despite her newfound strength, she would always subconsciously back away from someone who was holding a knife because of how she died on Earth. It took years to get rid of that mentality.

  Thud. Thud. Thud.

A small sound came from the entrance of the kitchen, causing both of them to turn their heads.

As Sarah was thinking about her past in this universe, Kelly had woken up and walked into the kitchen.

  “Morning.”

After they greeted each other, John smiled and asked Kelly to sit down opposite them. When Kelly sat down and faced both John and Sarah, John began explaining things the best he could.

“We want to explain why we’re living out in the wilderness, how Isabel and the others came to live with you, and many other things; however, you need to promise not to tell anybody about this.”

Kelly folded her arms on the table in front of her and rested her chin on her hands. With slight hesitation, she nodded and John continued.

“This all happened years ago in the neighbouring kingdom. I guess the first thing I should explain is that there were five major families in that kingdom at the time.

“I was a part of one family and your mother was a part of another. Both of those families were enemies for a long time. There had been deaths on both sides and when me and your mother met, we fought each other. Obviously, I came out on top.”

Sarah punched John’s arm. “How long are you going to be proud of that?”

John faced Sarah and smiled. “For life.”

Turning back to Kelly, he spoke again. “After your mother went back to her family, the head of the family decided to arrange a marriage between her and a distant member of the family. Your mother didn’t like the man. In fact, she tortured him every time he tried talking to her.

“Your mother made a deal with the head of the family. If she could capture me, then the arranged marriage would be broken. So, she came after me.

“After we fought the second time, your mother stopped attacking me and asked for my help. I didn’t trust her at first, but after knowing what was going on, I helped her get away from her family.

“Both of us went to a friend’s family to stay. I helped your mother fake her death so her family wouldn’t go looking for her, but that only lasted for a while as the man who was supposed to marry her found out she was alive.

“He and his father came after us, and after a tough fight, we managed to drive them back to their families, but your mother was seriously injured. The injury left her at death’s door for a long time.

“Out of anger, I went to your mother’s family for revenge. I kille
d everyone connected to them, and I only came back to my senses after it was over.

“Our friend’s family was suspicious about how an entire family was killed, but without proof, they had to let it go.

“A while later, your mother recovered and I went to do some training. While I was out, representatives from the last two major families came to investigate what happened.

“They accused me of killing off one of the families and some other things as well. Thanks to your mother, and a very long discussion, they were convinced that an outsider was to blame.

“During that long discussion, your mother told one of the major families the truth about the other, causing their united front against us to collapse. It wasn’t long after that discussion that the major families found proof of what your mother said and a war broke out.

“The one family had committed numerous crimes against humanity under everyone’s noses for profit, knowledge, and a few other reasons. After the truth was revealed, the three major families banded together and went to war with the fourth to get rid of them once and for all.

“Your mother knows medicine, so she served as a doctor during the war. It didn’t last that long and by the time I came back, the war was almost over. I rushed to the fourth family and killed a few enemies of ours before it ended.

“When we went back to our friend’s family, the head of the family grew weary of our strength because we weren't really a part of the family, nor did we show any kind of loyalty towards him.

“To fix this, he tried to arrange a marriage between his daughter and me. As soon as we found out, we both left that family and travelled towards this kingdom to get away from everyone we knew.

“On the way here, we met Isabel, Logan, Evan, Nathan, Kyle, and Cody. They were prisoners of a bandit group and were forced to drink something that burned their throats, causing their voices to be lost forever.

“After rescuing them, and after we figured out a way to communicate with each other through hand signals, they agreed to serve us for a while. We initially refused, but they wouldn’t take no for an answer.
